2025-26 Spring/Summer Developmental Academy & Academy Tryout Information

2025–2026 Tryout Information

Players interested in trying out must register for the 2026 season. There is no separate tryout registration—simply complete your season registration to be eligible.

  • Registration Opens: June 1

  • Tryout Registration Deadline: July 5 (for players attending tryouts)

  • Final Registration Deadline: September 30 (for players not attending tryouts)

  • Registration Process: All players should register for your age group– once tryouts are complete we will move players for the academy teams to the correct registration

Note: U9 and U10 players do not attend tryouts. Registration for U9/U10 also closes September 30.

Who Are Tryouts For?

Tryouts are held for players in U11–U18. While not mandatory, they are highly encouraged, especially for those seeking placement on higher-level teams.

At North Star FC, we aim to form teams at multiple competitive levels based on player ability and numbers:

  • Division 3 (D3)

  • Division 2 (D2)

  • Division 1 (D1)

  • NPL Premier

  • ECNL Regional League (ECNL RL)

Note: NPL Premier and ECNL RL begin at the U13 level.

Academy Teams (Formerly “Select Teams”)

  • Academy teams begin at U13 for both boys and girls

  • U13 & U14 Academy teams (NPL Premier or ECNL RL) begin play in the Fall

  • U15 and older Academy teams begin training in November

  • Teams competing in the TCSL National League will begin training in January

  • Registration- register for the 2026 Spring/Summer Competitive Season- once tryouts are completed we will move the players that make the academy team to the academy registration.
  • **If you are unable to attend tryouts and would like to be considered for an academy team, please email Leo on the boys side and Angelo on the girls side.

Academy rosters will be finalized shortly after tryouts, while D3, D2, and D1 team placements will be completed by late November.

Players from Other Clubs

Players from neighboring clubs are welcome to attend Academy tryouts. If a player does not make a North Star FC Academy team, they may request a release to return to their home club.

Team Formation & Placement

To build the strongest teams possible, some age groups may be combined. Final team placements will be based on tryout performance and coach evaluations.

Tryout Process:

The ultimate goal of tryouts is to have a ranking for every player in the age group completed by our technical staff.

 

  • As players arrive, they are to check in at the shed.
  • Evaluators line up players and cross check numbers with google spreadsheet.
  • Players are then randomly assigned at the first tryout to a team to play (number of teams and what we play 7v7 / 9v9 are dependent on the number of players signed up).
    • We have a minimum of two fields, field A and field B.
    • Field A can be considered the higher level of play and field B the lower.
    • Every 15 minutes players are moved between groups based on their ability.
    • At the end of the session the evaluators have ranked all players on their field 1-X (there are evaluators for each field and then a senior staff (Angelo Tartaglia/ Leo Barbosa) member overseeing).
    • Players are thanked and then dismissed.
    • Information is added to age group spreadsheet to help with the selection process.

    Tryout FAQ's

    What If I can not make tryouts?

    If you can not attend tryouts, we will only use past season coaching evaluations for placement.

    We ask that you inform your coaching director if you can not attend- Angelo (Girls), Leo (Boys).

    Players are strongly encouraged to attend tryouts as it is another data point.

    When will teams be announced?

    Teams will be announced once all the data points have been compiled- Spring/summer, Tryouts, and Fall.

    The most time consuming data point is getting all the past season coaches together for the age group to review placements- due to everyone’s busy schedule this takes the most time. 

    All teams with the exception of select level teams – teams competing in NPL or USYS National League  will not be announced until the fall season data is collected.

    NPL / USYS National League Teams will be announced as quickly as possible.

    Can I tryout up an age group?

    Players are only allowed to try up an age group if they already are on the top team in the age group they are trying up for.

    For example, if a true u14 for the 2022 season (birth year 2008) is on the top U15 team for the 2022 season, that player can try up for the 2023 season.

    All other players CAN NOT try up unless they are invited to do so by the coaching staff.

    Can I assume the format will be the same as indoor?

    Yes. The optimal tryout experience is placing players in situations where they touch the ball often. 4v4, 7v7, and 9v9 provide the best opportunities for this.

    As a parent, can I stay and watch?

    Yes, if a parent does decide to stay, they must stay in the parking lot. No parents will be allowed on the fields.

    How do I sign up for tryouts?

    Players must register pay the registration fee for the 2026 season to be considered for tryouts.

    Players are not allowed to attend tryouts unless they are registered.

    There will be several payment options.

    You can not sign up at tryouts.
